The prayer shawl ministry at First Baptist Church in Greenwood is very special to me personally. I received a prayer shawl for my ordination; my grandmother received one when my grandfather passed away; my niece received one when she was born prematurely and spent almost 100 days in the NICU.
These prayer shawls and prayer squares are knitted and crocheted by members of FBC Greenwood to give to people with serious illnesses, to premature babies when they are born, to seriously sick children, to someone after the death of a loved one, and for various other reasons.
The members of this ministry meet once a month in person and do a lot of the knitting and crocheting outside of this time as well. Once prayer shawls and prayer squares are made, a minister will come and bless them.
This group is multigenerational, and they are willing to teach others to knit and crochet. Members of this group are currently teaching a young adult and a youth how to crochet.
This ministry was started 9 years ago, and has given out 245 prayer shawls and countless prayer squares to church members and community members. One of the members of this ministry, Diana Edwards, said that it is “a blessing to me to know something I can do is a help.” Mrs. Edwards crochets, and even will bring her yarn with her to worship on Sundays. She and others have created patterns that they are willing to share with others that would like to start a similar ministry in their church.
