Although our work with our children and their families has been hampered by the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic, Palmetto Works and Palmetto Kids have still been serving to the best of our ability. Here are examples of how three families have been especially impacted. Each has shown remarkable resilience and gratitude in our efforts to support them through this crisis. (The names have been changed to protect the identities of our families.)

Rodriquez Family
The Rodriquez family is headed by Bunny, a housekeeper in the tourism industry.
She is the mother of seven children who participate in Palmetto Kids summer camp, after-school program, and an innovative disaster recovery program called Camp Noah.
With the assistance of our donors and volunteers, all seven of the children received Amazon Fire tablets. The family receives weekly produce boxes and monthly $50 Food Lion gift cards.
The children are so faithful in participating in our weekly bible study, our art projects, and writing contests.
An anonymous donor purchased $380 in groceries as a Christmas gift to this family.
Mason Family
Twelve-year-old Joel Mason and his mother Darlene were devasted to learn that he contracted the Corona virus, especially since they were not sure how he was exposed. He has recovered at home and is doing well, completing his studies through remote learning.
Palmetto Works was able to provide him with one of the 40 Amazon Fire tablets distributed to our students so that he could connect with his school. Ms. Mason receives a monthly stipend to pay for Internet service.
Joel and his mother, who works at a local fast-food restaurant, appreciate the weekly produce boxes provided by PW along with a monthly $50 Food Lion gift card.
As a prize for a writing contest, they won four nutritious meals prepared by Chef DeWayne Beaty, the CHOPS Produce resident chef. (Please pray for the family as Ms. Mason’s father died in early February.)
Hero Family
Another remarkable family that we serve is the Hero family. Claudine, who also works in a fast-food restaurant, is the mother of five children and grandmother of two.
Three of the children have participated in Palmetto Kids for the past four years and are growing spiritually, physically, and intellectually.
Terron, Shania, and Marlo have received the Amazon Fire tablets in addition to a printer and paper supplies in order to print out their “class work” and homework assignments.
The entire family benefits from the produce boxes, monthly $50 Food Lion gift cards and other special opportunities.
These children are very engaged, producing charming stories and beautiful artwork. We are so excited to have their works displayed at the North Myrtle Beach branch of the Horry County Library for Black History Month.
