Director, Carolina Immigrant Alliance

One of the main goals of the Carolina Immigrant Alliance is to create welcoming communities that celebrate diversity. Over the past year we have been working to find unique ways to do this, to have our community unite behind common interests and learn about the cultures that surround us.

Thus the Around the World in 5K was born. This event was originally planned for May and was to be a live event, but it has been reimagined as a virtual event in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As such, over the course of two weeks, participants will be invited to compete in their choice of race (5K, 10K, 2 mile fun run, or a 10 mile cycling race.) You can complete and upload your times as many times as you like and your best time will be counted for the competitions.

But that’s not all. While you are competing you will receive biweekly emails from us detailing the cultures that are now making our community home. These emails will share details about music and dance, food and drink, and more. By participating, not only will you get to better your health and compete with friends and family, you will also be able to learn about and celebrate the growing diversity of our state.

After the two weeks we will announce the winners. Categories include:

Fastest Times (on all races)
Most Times Completed (on all races)
Farthest distance walked, ran, biked.
Biggest social media presence
Various “door” prizes each week of the event
